So we did our health promotion teaching thing in the elementary schol yesterday. It went surprisingly well. It was on handwashing and we taught them words like "microorganism" and "pathogen" and then did a really neat experiment with "pretend germs" - glow-in-the-dark lotion- and black light. After teaching about proper handwashing techniques, they went to wash the lotion off their hands. with the black light, they could see how poorly they washed and the parts they missed. They were very excited. I had a great time teaching, i was so comfortable up there, i guess the teacher in me just kicked in. and the kids were actually listening! and then when we were done, it suddenly felt like it needed a conclusion so I spontanously asked them what they learned and what they were going to remember. it was prettry neat.
don't get me wrong. i'm still very glad that i'm not going to be an elementary teacher. i don't want the whole 30 random children in room, the constant disciplining, the "stop talking, get back to work", etc. [okay, so this particular class was a handful] But i sure love all the teaching involved in nursing. ask me a question about how the body works, and i'll go off on a tangent (just ask R), or else i'll dive into my texts to find out about it.
next week I start in the labour & delivery and postpartum wards at health sciences. i'm pumped. i love learning about women's health. 12-hour shifts, here i come!
