almost....

I almost witnessed the coolest miracle in the world on tuesday. okay, i witnessed most of it. it was my first day of clinical and after the orientation part, we were thrown right into the labour & delivery ward. at first i just watched my labouring patient. by the end of my time there, she was pushing and i was running around helping the nurse getting towels and cold cloths for her forehead and even charting a bit, and holding her leg for her.... man, what a crazy experience the birthing process is. [for those of you who have actually given birth, you know what i'm talknig about. more, in fact, than i do.] anyways, by the end of my 12-hour shift, she was close, but not close enough for me to stick around longer. when i got home, i was so pumped. i was bouncing off the walls. wow. i mean, after my first day of my geriatric clinical ['geriatric' basically means 'old people', in case you wanted to know], i can't say i was exactly this pumped. hmmmm. i'm definately viewing this experience as a possible future career [in labour & delivery]. we shall see where God leads.

for all you moms and dads reading this, any advice on being a good student nurse? any bad experiences? i love these kinds of stories! ya, i may be weird. maybe even a bit gross. oh well.

ok, well my birth story is not the best one - (check on my blog on March 20 & i'll tell the WHOLE story) i was in labor for 4 days, and it really sucked.

i didn't have much experience with students - i had a student dr. fill out all of my forms when i found out that i was pregnant...he was really nice & i was thankful that he didn't have to examine me (though after 4 days of labor you really don't care who "goes there" anymore!). and we had a student come talk to us on the last day we were in the hospital - telling us how to care for our baby & such. Both of these students were sooo patient, and so nice, and always made sure we understood what they were saying. if we had any questions, they went right away to find out the answer. and that's what you want after having a baby - especially your FIRST baby! because you are really nervous & don't feel that you could do anything right.

as for bad experiences - a couple things - don't try to tell the woman having the baby that you understand how she's feeling & that it's REALLY NOT THAT BAD. especially if you have never birthed a kid. that was a big mistake that one of my nurses made. and i got really sick of hearing "well, you don't really know what's going on with your body - you are young & this is your first baby". to make a very long story short...after i begged for a c-section for over 3 days, they rushed me into emergency surgery because the baby was in such danger. yep, but supposidly i didn't know what was going on...

i think that your excitement for what you "almost" experienced might show you that this would be the perfect place for you. i got excited FOR YOU just reading this! and from what i know of you, you would be a very caring, understanding & patient nurse - which the health field needs more of. i say go for it!

Hey, what about March 7! Did you see a baby being born? Did you help Ray deliver a baby?

mom, i didn't help ray deliver a baby, but i did watch him do a pelvic exam and he taught me a bunch of stuff. you're gonna have to wait until tomorrow when i have more time and am a little less tired to write about the 2 brand new babies that i helped welcome into this world!
