hecla island

i'm sitting at the computer, eating a 'looney toons' freezie that has been in our freezer since our first summer... 3 years ago. despite the fact that it smells like cough syrup, it's still yummy.

i just realized that i never said anything on here about our first camping experience of the summer, on hecla island. sorry. it was, shall we say, adventuresome. let me backtrack. in the morning before we left, i was praying for the day, for safety and fun times, etc. and i prayed that we would have fun, and have an adventure. i do recall thinking that asking for an 'advenutre' with no specifications may be risky, but that God knew that i meant something fun, where no one would get hurt (don't worry, no one did get hurt!)... and i left it at that. next time i will be a little more specific with my 'adventure' requests'. we knew that there was some rain expected for the weekend, but we would tough it out, we brought a bunch of boardgames to play in the tent just in case (the brand new tent i might add, which we had fallen in love with 2 days earlier and purchased the day before - eureka el capitan 3).
we did have a great time, despite the major thunderstorms all night. yay, our tent is waterproof! and very sturdy! you can sorta see it in the pic, the picture of me and the very saggy tarp above my head.
in the morning, the storm had passed, but then another hit, this time with crazy cold winds. right during our pancake breakfast. we madly dug into the dirt to guide the torrents that poured off of the tarp
away from the tent.
then we decided to pack up. the ranger lady felt bad for us and gave us the night for free and we spent the rest of the day checking out the beach (notice the wind!) and the boardwalk in the marsh. so much fun!!

we actually then headed out to steinbach
and surprised my dad on his birthday and stayed the night. well, he thinks we came for his birthday, but really we just wanted a place to dry out our stuff, have a campfire and maybe snag a piece of birthday cake....

(this was another storm that we mostly outran on the way home)

the weekend turned out to be a lot of fun! but we wanna go back sometime when it's warmer and drier.

Ahh... nothing like those Manitoban thunderstorms. We had quite a storm the other day- Jake and I left the house dressed for summer and were caught right in the middle of it- even had thunder and lightening which is unusual out here. ANYWAY- could you send me your phone number sometime? We just got this nifty internet phone service... free to Canada!! I called my family today... even Grandma (who wasn't home)... It has always cost an arm and a leg to call Canada- until now.
Later skater....
