oh the hardships of my life....

for our anniversary, we received some money and we want to buy a new vacuum cleaner, because.... well, the 30 year old hand-me-down from my parents isn't really cutting the mustard anymore. i've come to realize that most people don't usually have to vacuum over the same spot 7 times and then still have to pick the fuzz or crumb out of the carpet by hand, and place it on top of the carpet, and then proceed to vacuum over the area 1 or 2 more times and, if i'm lucky, it'll finally get sucked up. hmmm.
but what kind of vacuum cleaner to get?? canister or no canister? bags or no bags? we'd REALLY like to know your opinions! what kind do you have and do you like it??

second opinion: a new blender??
for my birthday (which was last saturday!) i also received some money, and i am contemplating getting a new blender. i have one and it works pretty well. but i do have to stop it every few moments and stir it all up, since it only blends the bottom 1/3. and it doesn't crush ice - it just shoots it up to the top and smacks against the lid before coming back down, only to be shot up again.
i lived with a few girls before we got married and for some reason my blender was stored in the 'pantry' which was a non-insulated room off the kitchen, which froze in the winter. and one of my roomies had a brilliant idea that she'd use mine instead of the one in the kitchen, the one that was not frozen. ever since then it's way louder than it was and smells really bad when i turn it on.
but i LOVE making smoothies! they're so yummy and i feel all healthy after eating 2 bananas, some yogurt, and a dozen strawberries!

so, any opinions on the blender? and the vacuum??

this post made me laugh. that is so true about the vacumming up the crumb thing! well, we don't have much carpet in our house but we still have enough to own one. We bough a bissel bagless vacumm recently. nice, no stupid bags and it does the trick. also, for a blender, ummmm, i don't know what we have, we don't use it much. i only bought it when I was making baby food. when we make smoothies or milkshakes I usually use my hand braun. (that long stick mixer thing.) good luck on the appliance shopping!

We got a vacuum as a wedding gift or an anniversary gift. It has bags and it is loud but it does the trick. If we were made of money we would probably consider spending a little extra to get something quieter and bagless. Blender-wise, if you end up finding one that works well, let us know! Maybe the only ones that work really well are the ones at bars (where they regularly blend ice).

I use a vacuum... but only before company comes. And then light the candles because it makes our whole house reek like a wet dog (even though we don't have a dog. I think something crawled up and died in the vacuum.) I'd say go for a vacuum. A cheap one works well. Ours is a Dirt Devil something.. not sure what kind. Just over $100 US. Just don't get it and give it to your husband for an anniversary gift. I made that mistake already.) One day when you are big and pregnant you won't want to bend over and have to pick up the crumb... OR... invest in one of those robot things that do it all for you. I like that idea.
Even better is to get a toddler. Mine seems to eat all crumbs, cheerios, etc. off the floor and it saves me time in vacuuming or sweeping. I'll send him over for the day....

we have a dirt devil too. it was a gift though, so i'm not sure how much it was. we rarely use our blender, but it blends well...

I tried one of those Dyson amazing-vacs at Costco. Or rather, BO tried it, while the demo lady and my friend and I made comments about how he could never make excuses about not knowing how to vacuum. But the vacuum was great! they had all kinds of little pieces, and some big pieces, on a black rug, and it got them all!

But they're a little expensive. The one we have at home is good, but I dont' remember the brand. I'll have to look it up when I'm not at work.
