one of my campers only joined us on wednesday because she was away. i think that she was at her cabin in b.c. until then. at lunch time, she had a lot of expensive things in her lunch (lunchables build-your-own-pizza thingies, build-your-own cookies with icing and sprinkles, etc). her 'best friend' informed us that she had all of this stuff because "she's rich". "ya, i'm rich," she says. oh boy, i think to myself, this girl just barely arrived.... and i'm not liking this conversation already. so then of course the other girls want to join in. "well, i have a friend whose rich. they have a cabin." rich girl: "well, we have 2 cabins and at one we're getting a pool with a waterslide." "well, i have a friend whose rich..." "ya, so do i....." "me too...."
hmmmm, think fast, julia.
"well, i'm rich," i tell the girls. they all stare at me. pause. "yup, i have an awesome family. and i have some really amazing friends. i'm really good friends with Jesus. and i like what i learning in school....." the girls started smiling as they began catching on to what i was meaning. they said, "yeah, you don't need money to be rich." "you can be rich with other things too." etc. etc. this made me very glad that they could understand this.
there's a pause in the conversation, and rich girl smiles and says, "yeah, but i'm rich with money."

the waterslides were a blast today. it's fun because even though the lines were super long (it's been above 30 degrees every day this week), i know that i'm there so that the kids can have fun - and i can still go sliding as much as a want to.
i got to go down a few times with a little girl on my lap. i felt like a mom.
